Pentedattilo - The city was founded as a Greek colony of the city of Chalcis, in 640 BC. A flourishing commercial center during the eras of Magna Graecia and Roman, its activity decreased during the Byzantine domination, when it was sacked, especially by the Saracens.

In the twelfth century, it was conquered by the Normans, and with Capo d'Armi, Condofuri and Montebello Ionico, became part of the baronal fief of the Abenavoli family. These were replaced by the Francoperta, originally from Reggio Calabria, then chronologically by the Alberti, until 1760, the Clement and the Ramirez (1823).

The city was severely damaged by an earthquake of 1783, which caused the migration of a large part of the population to Melito di Porto Salvo. The city remained completely uninhabited from the mid-1960s to the 1980s, when it was partially restored and repopulated by volunteers from all over Europe.
