The diplomatic and military tensions between India and Pakistan have sharply escalated following the April 23, 2025, terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in 26 fatalities, including 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali tourist. The militant group Kashmir Resistance, believed to be linked to Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility. India has accused Pakistan of supporting cross-border terrorism, a charge Islamabad denies, asserting the attack was domestically driven. 

India’s Response
• Diplomatic Measures: India expelled Pakistani diplomats, recalled its own from Islamabad, and reduced its High Commission staff in Pakistan. All visas for Pakistani nationals were revoked, and the Attari–Wagah border crossing was closed.  
• Treaty Suspension: India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, a critical water-sharing agreement, citing Pakistan’s alleged support for terrorism. This move has significant implications for Pakistan’s agriculture sector. 
• Military Posturing: The Indian Navy deployed the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant towards the Arabian Sea near Pakistan, signaling heightened military readiness. 

Pakistan’s Countermeasures
• Reciprocal Actions: Pakistan expelled Indian diplomats, closed its airspace to Indian aircraft, and suspended all trade with India. It also suspended the 1972 Simla Agreement, which has been a cornerstone of bilateral relations.  
• Warnings: Pakistan warned that any Indian attempts to alter river flows under the Indus Waters Treaty would be considered acts of war. 
• Military Exercises: Pakistan announced live-fire missile tests in the Arabian Sea, coinciding with India’s naval deployment. 

International Reactions

The United Nations has called for restraint and dialogue between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. Global powers, including the US, UK, and China, have condemned the attack and urged both countries to de-escalate tensions. 

Current Status

As of April 25, 2025, diplomatic ties are severely strained, with both countries taking significant retaliatory measures. Military posturing continues, and the situation remains volatile, with the potential for further escalation if diplomatic efforts fail.
