Lesson 5: The Cost of Discipleship featuring Dr. Tom Tarrants, President Emeritus, C.S. Lewis Institute

From the beginning of his earthly ministry, Jesus
told his disciples that following him would be costly. But
he also promised you will be blessed “when people insult
you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil
against you because of me” (Matt. 5:11). Many in the
church today have either never read those words, or have
tried to ignore them. No one likes to suffer or pay a price
for his or her faith. And yet, if we really do have the
truth about reality and it is found in Christ, then we
must be willing to risk all in order to be faithful to him.
Christian martyr Jim Elliot wrote in his
journals, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep
to gain what he cannot lose.” The intent of this lesson is
to encourage you to consider the cost of following Jesus
and at the same time realize that there is no better
way to live life to the fullest.
