• Always test your stitches on a scrap of your project fabric to dial in the right tension, stitch length, and needle—what looks perfect on one material might pucker or skip on another.
• Sewing pins are great for precision and curves, especially on woven fabrics, while clips are ideal for thick layers or delicate knits where pins might distort or leave holes.
• Seam allowance is the extra space between your stitching line and the edge of the fabric giving you room to sew, adjust, and finish your seams without affecting the fit.
• Backstitching reinforces the beginning and end of your seam by stitching in reverse for a few stitches to prevent unraveling and ensure durability, especially on high-stress areas like armholes or side seams.
• Topstitching is a decorative or functional stitch made on the outside of the garment, typically along seams or edges, to add structure, detail, or reinforce areas like collars, hems, and pockets.
