The much-anticipated presidential assassination drama, starring Michael Shannon and Matthew Macfadyen, has released on Netflix to critical acclaim. Death by Lightning is nothing short of exceptional. Like all shows based on a true story, parts of the story were cut.  The most notable omission is the trial of Charles Guiteau. Although 144 years have passed since the case, Guiteau’s trial is well documented in old newspapers and the 1882 book The Life of Guiteau and the Official History of the Most Exciting Case on Record: Being the Trial of Guiteau by H.H. Garfield on July 2, 1881, and a police officer arrested him before he could flee the Baltimore and Potomac train station. He would stay in jail on attempted murder charges for over ten weeks while the president was fighting for his life.  According to The New York Times, the same day that Chester Arthur was sworn in as President of the United States, Guiteau was indicted for murder.
