Anglo-Turkish Society talk:
John Garstang of Liverpool University was a pioneer of Turkish archaeology and the founder of the British Institute at Ankara. His
book The Land of the Hittites (1910) not only laid the foundations for the entire field of Hittite historical geography, it also
played a role in the negotiations that led to the foundation of the Turkish Republic.
Another part of Garstang’s legacy, which was unknown until recently, is his extensive photographic archives – comprising
thousands of glass plate negatives housed in the University of Liverpool. These have now been digitised and restored and reveal
a fascinating insight into the landscapes and peoples of late Ottoman Turkey.
