In this video, I reveal my new method of getting a tan indoors! Basically, I sit at my office all the time and rarely go outside. This means I have gotten very pale - especially in the winter when it is too cold to work on my car outside! Not only am I very pale, but I'm not getting vitamin D and the sun's "light therapy" effects. Well, in order to solve these issues, I have set up a "artificial sunlight" system for myself! Using my existing webcam mount lamp stand, I have simply replaced the bulb with a UV lizard bulb. The bulb I bought is the "Solar Glo 160W Exo Terra UV Bulb". This bulb is a self-ballasted mercury vapor reptile lamp that provides the benefits of natural sunlight. It provides ultraviolet light including UVA and UVB. UVA causes you to tan and UVB causes you to get vitamin D! It is a full spectrum light so it also gives the light therapy benefits of the sun. It fits into a standard light socket. I can use it in the mornings while I'm banking or checking my emails. I only need say 10-20 minutes tops before it becomes TOO MUCH! I did 40 minutes and got very burnt. I keep it about 14 inches from me. I let it hit my arms and face/neck. On another occasion that week I let it do the back of my head/neck for a even look. I also let it hit my legs once. It doesn't have to be perfect, but having a tan head and neck is a huge plus looks-wise and the health benefits are MANY. It can help cure eczema, acne, improve serotonin levels for improved mood and suppressed appetite (=weight loss), it can improve melatonin levels which will make you feel livelier and more energetic, it will increase white blood cell production which will boost your immune system, it will also increase calcium levels in your body for improved bone strength. These bulbs give off 500IU of sun an hour and the federal government guidelines recommend 400-600 IU of sun per day. Reptile bulbs have only 10% of the UVA that the sun has (UVA is the bad stuff that makes you tan and causes cancer) while retaining sun-like levels of UVB (the stuff that gives the health benefits).

Basically, sunlight is HEALTHY for you in small quantities. 10-20 minutes a day is great. Overexposure to sun can cause cancer. So just keep it to a minimum and you are going to just get the benefits. Also sun damage is cumulative over a lifetime so if you have gotten WAY too much sun in your life, maybe opt out of more sun? I have not gotten too much sun in my life and rarely get much of any of it, so I feel I can safely still take in sun in moderate quantities and enjoy the health benefits. This bulb enables me to do so without leaving my room and without losing any productivity! I do it right in my office!
