This is a rough cut from a current documentary project about espionage in the American Revolution. It tells a small start of the very large story of James la Fayette, who was born enslaved on a plantation in Virginia, but served as a spy to the Marquis de la Fayette during the Yorktown campaign, and thereby earned his freedom (and took la Fayette's surname as his own). It's important to note, however, that the number of enslaved men and women freed by the British during the American Revolution was far, far greater -- the tens of thousands -- than those who received their liberty from the patriots. James was an exception to the rule.
