The Marylebone Flyer. A non-stop run from Birmingham Moor Street to Marylebone behind 5043 - Earl of Mount Edgcumbe.
The lack of a water stop made this a difficult train to follow, so we played safe and stayed near to London, beginning the day with two shots either side of Beaconsfield: One from the high bridge to the west of Beaconsfield station, the other from a field on the London side of Seer Green.
Long gone are the days when the loco would be turned on Marylebone's own turntable; now the nearest turning point is the triangle at Greenford.
We managed to catch the first diesel leg of the ECS working from Marylebone to South Ruislip, at Sudbury hill, missed the steam section between South Ruislip and Greenford, due to heavy traffic, but caught the class 33 at Hanwell.
As the train made its way to Southall for servicing, word was going round that 5043 had started at least one lineside fire on the way to London, so it wasn't terribly surprising when the return ECS working emerged from Castle Bar tunnel behind 47245, with the disgraced Earl tucked in behind.
For the final shot of the day we went to another of our favourite stations, Seer Green.
