In this video, I explain exactly how the 2008 financial crisis destroyed the global economy. It started in 2002 when the Fed slashed interest rates to zero, making borrowing incredibly cheap. Banks started giving mortgages to anyone with a pulse—even people with no income, no job, and no assets. These were called NINJA loans, and they were everywhere.
By 2005, everyone was buying houses they couldn't afford and flipping them for profit. Real estate became a lottery ticket. But those subprime mortgages were toxic. Wall Street bundled them into mortgage-backed securities, got ratings agencies to stamp them AAA (even though they were garbage), and sold them as safe investments to pension funds and banks worldwide.
Some investors saw the fraud and created credit default swaps—insurance that paid out when mortgages failed. Wall Street sold these thinking housing would never crash. They were wrong.
In 2007, housing prices started falling. Subprime loans imploded. Banks realized their "safe" AAA assets were worthless. Lehman Brothers collapsed overnight. Credit markets froze. Unemployment hit 10%. 8 million jobs gone. 4 million homes foreclosed. $19 trillion in wealth destroyed.
The government bailed out Wall Street with $700 billion in taxpayer money (TARP). The Fed printed trillions more (quantitative easing). Wall Street survived and paid themselves bonuses. Main Street got pink slips.
The most shocking part? Zero major Wall Street CEOs went to jail. Not one arrest. Occupy Wall Street erupted in 2011 with rage. The system was rigged.
