When the very first microscopic animals and other organisms were discovered in the late 1600s, virtually no one believed they existed. Having crafted a significantly more powerful microscope lens, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek became the first human to observe microscopic animals like rotifers and nematodes, along with single-celled organisms like bacteria. His work revealed the fascinating microscopic world we had been living alongside the entire time.
