Описание к видео Ghislaine Maxwell pleads fifth at House deposition

Rep. James Comer (R-KY), the chair of the Oversight Committee, said Ghislaine Maxwell, a longtime associate and accomplice of Jeffrey Epstein, invoked her Fifth Amendment right during a closed-door, virtual deposition before the panel on Monday.

"Unfortunately, she had an opportunity today to answer questions that every American has — questions that would be very important in this investigation — and she chose to invoke the Fifth Amendment," Rep. Comer told reporters after the deposition.

Ms. Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2022 after a federal jury found her guilty of helping Mr. Epstein traffic teenage girls. She denies abusing anyone and says she was made a scapegoat following Mr. Epstein's death in prison in 2019.

Her attorneys said she would be willing to answer questions if granted immunity by the committee or clemency by President Trump, who has declined to rule out doing so.

"[I] don't think she should be granted any type of immunity or clemency," Rep. Comer said.

Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are scheduled to sit for closed-door, recorded depositions before the panel later this month as part of the Epstein investigation.

The Clintons have not been implicated in Mr. Epstein's crimes and have requested that their testimony be given in a public setting.

An attorney for Ms. Maxwell told lawmakers she would testify that neither President Trump nor President Clinton engaged in wrongdoing in their relationships with Mr. Epstein.
