If you’re the kind of traveler who likes to wander freely, make your own plans, and change them on a whim… Libya probably isn’t the place for you right now.

To visit, you need a tour guide with you 24/7—and you’ll also have a government-assigned security guard following you the entire time. Everything has to be pre-approved, and the itinerary is pretty tightly structured.

That said, the guides and guards I met were super chill and flexible within the limits. But still, there certainly are limits. You can’t just rent a car and go.

Honestly though, I kind of respect the system. The fact that the government assigns someone to keep you safe (and charges you nothing for it!) shows they do care about protecting visitors—and in today’s world, that’s not nothing.

Libya isn’t easy travel—but for the right kind of traveler, it’s absolutely worth it.
