Volunteers around the world and in the northwest metro honored victims of the 9/11 attacks by engaging in community work. Forty-five volunteers from the Twin Cities Habitat For Humanity's A Brush With Kindness program and API, a Twin Cities–based international construction company, made repairs for a Crystal veteran and his family.

Jason Jones served 10 years in the Minnesota Army National Guard. He also did two tours in Iraq. Jones is going to college and financial resources are limited, so house repairs are on the back burner.

"This house needed a lot of cosmetic stuff, structurally it's in great shape," said Douglas Hayden, a supervisor with A Brush With Kindness.

There are many things on the to-do list and will take workers about two days to get them all done. They are painting and removing rotted wood. Crews are also fixing up the garage.

Jones also has a brother staying with him, who too is a veteran.

"The fact we're doing this for brothers who have both served our country on 9/11 doing that today feels awesome," said API volunteer Shannon Swanson-Arend.

Jones couldn't be at the house while the work was being done Friday, but wanted volunteers to know what a difference they are making.

In a telephone interview, Jones told 12 News, "Thank you, and I'm grateful that you took time out of your busy lives to come and donate your time and effort to help me out."
