Once predominantly associated with tennis, the two-handed backhand is now a staple in pickleball, providing players with power, stability, and deceptive versatility.

For Navratil, this shot is not merely an option but a necessity. The added strength it provides, especially on high balls or in awkward positions, makes it indispensable.

Navratil identifies several key advantages of the two-handed backhand:
Increased Power
Improved Stability
Closer Contact Point
Deceptive Capabilities

Zane offers a step-by-step guide to mastering the two-handed backhand:

Most players use a continental grip with their dominant hand and place their non-dominant hand above it on the paddle. Some opt for an eastern backhand grip for added topspin, but the continental remains the most common. "Close your stance and focus on rotational power through your core," Navratil advises.

The swing should be powered by the body's rotation, not just the arms. Ensure that your contact point is out in front, near your leading leg, to maximize control and power. Weight transfer is key—your back leg should naturally follow through after the shot. Practice dinking with your non-dominant hand to build coordination and feel. Keep your dominant hand nearby to simulate the motion of a two-handed backhand.

The additional power helps punish poorly executed attacks. A consistent motion disguises your intent, making it difficult for opponents to anticipate your next move. The added stability is invaluable for maintaining control in these situations.
