These are my favourite 10 (well actually 12) movies of 1986, plus some honourable mentions, two big disappointments, and one terrible movie (which was even more awful to me because it starred two of my favs; Emilio Estevez and Demi Moore).

It has been 7 months since I posted my top 10 selections from 1985,

So thought it was time to resume the movie lists.

1986 was a really good and deep year for movies; including not one but two all-time classic John Hughes movies, an Oliver Stone breakthrough. And even though there could be only one....there was actually 12 because I had a 3 way tie for #10 (I hate tough decisions).

I should. note that of all these movies, Crocodile Dundee was one that has not aged well at all. If you have never seen it, probably don't bother. However, back in the day not only was it great but it started or pushed a whole Aussie trend (travel, slickers/duster jackets, Fosters Beer, and in a round about way Banana Republic).

Other notes from me;
Ferris Bueller's Day Off has actually climbed in ratings from me over the years and a few more viewings. Somehow I really didn't appreciate it back in the day and only rated it a 7/10 but it has grown on me with maturity (which is a weird thing to say about a high school movie).

William Peterson's performance in Manhunter was to me one of the most underrated performances in cinema. He was brilliant. I like this movie even more than Silence of the Lambs or the remake "Red Dragon". It was a predecessor to Criminal Minds.

Stand By Me is another movie that has actually grown higher in my rankings over the years, which makes sense since it deals so much with nostalgia. I didn't need nostalgia at the time that I saw this move back in the day because I was still living in it.

I tried to use old/original theatrical previews wherever I could find them. For instance both Platoon and Top Gun had a pretty low key tone, and different music than later trailers would use. I thought about changing them to later trailers (especially Top Gun) but decided to leave them intact. Part of the magic of Top Gun (I'm not going to lie) was the awesome soundtrack. If the movie had terrible music like in this original trailer I highly doubt it would have made the same emotional and visceral impact that it did on me and so many others. I'm actually looking forward to the long awaited sequel (even after the disastrous new Bill & Ted's movie last year).
