Lou Gramm Performs "Midnight Blue" on KOME/Blazy & Bob Show

Lou Gramm was more than prepared to perform live with our "Breakfast Club" band, The Blazers. This one was in a giant tent behind the Marriott Hotel in Santa Clara (next to where Levi Stadium is today). It had the largest live audience, almost 500 listeners enjoyed a free breakfast and show. It also had some early morning drama.

If I remember correctly, the Marriott was using the tent for a huge summertime event. We were invited to use the space for our live show. What the hotel didn't take into account, was that a live band would be playing right outside the hotel. By 6:20, hotel management came down to say that guests were complaining about the music. The Blazers would play music every time we went into a commercial break, every 15 minutes. KOME Promotions Director Dave Wohlman told management that we'd have the band turn down. The manager said "And the drums." Dave said, "Yeah, I'll have him turn down his drums." Classic.

Needless to say, the volume stayed the same. We told management to invite anyone who complained to free breakfast and Lou Gramm of Foreigner fame was going to perform live. That was the end of the drama. Some did come down from the hotel tower to watch.

Lou brought along Ben Gramm on drums, and Larry Oakes on keyboards.

So Dennis Coulter was off his kit, but on tambourine. If you notice, there's a sign on his drum set that says "Birthday Zone". It was Dennis' birthday. We gave him a cake and the audience sang "Happy Birthday" to him, as he modeled the latest '90s summer fashion...tucked in shirt, shorts, and pulled up white socks with tennis shoes. Good times.

When I introduced Lou Gramm on stage at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk on Friday night, June 17, 2016, Dennis and I spoke with Lou before the show. We talked about how great he was to perform that morning.

As for the sound on this one, it was always tough to mix on-air because we were filtering the entire show through an upgraded phone line back to the studio in San Jose. It's all we could do in 1990, moving locations, we couldn't get a permanent DSL. (It WAS the Silicon Valley, but we weren't there yet technically.) We've mixed the broadcast audio and video sound together to make it a little more enjoyable. Lou's mic was a bit hot. However, we're glad to have this long-lost video, compliments of Greg Mullins' personal collection.

Like all of the guests that would perform, Lou ends with a big smile on his face, along with the band. Another job well done for the Bay Area musicians I assembled in 1988, The Blazers.
