Описание к видео WLS Channel 7 - Flynn-Daly Eyewitness News at 10pm (Excerpt, 1971)

Here's a rare color kinescope consisting of excerpts of an edition of the 10pm Flynn-Daly Eyewitness News on WLS Channel 7 from 47 years ago!

Anchored by the legendary duo of Fahey Flynn and Joel Daly, and featuring John Coleman (who recently passed away) on weather.

(This was before their names were stricken from the newscast title, and the theme music as heard here replaced with the edit of Lalo Schifrin's "Tar Sequence" from "Cool Hand Luke" [1967] that originated from Eyewitness News on sister station WABC Channel 7 in New York City.)

Includes:

Fahey opening newscast by reporting on heavy winds blowing all through Midwest, with picture of 22-car pile-up on Interstate 75 near Troy, MI shown; followed by "Eyewitness Color Newsfilm" of effects of 50 mph winds in "Loop" section, including broken glass at a Florsheim store and a traffic light fallen to the ground as he reports on other incidences around Indiana and other Midwestern states

Next, John Coleman reports on current temperature readings in Chicago area, and declares it "the most miserable night of the year," with the cold wave not ending until Friday and promising more later in the newscast

Joel reports on blocking of investigations in Springfield into doings of the late Illinois Secretary of State, Paul Powell, as recommended by old colleague, State Congressman Clyde Choate

Flynn-Daly Eyewitness News open, with long shot of anchor desk (and title on screen set in Helvetica Medium; also with reference to sportscaster Bill Frink who is not seen in this clip) (voiceover by Al Parker)

The theme music for the newscast heard on this excerpt is the “007 Theme,” composed by John Barry and first heard in the 1964 film, FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE. It was also subsequently used in many of the Bond films that followed. (info courtesy Glen Grant)

Commercial: European Naturals shampoo-in hair color

Incomplete commercial for FDS feminine spray (tape cuts off at that point)

Recording continues with the ending half of a commercial for Axion laundry detergent

Joel's Commentary about two scientists' interview with a man undergoing psychiatric evaluation, who insisted he had seen a flying saucer

Fahey ends newscast by introducing The Dick Cavett Show coming up next, and announcing he, Joel and the news team will return the next day at 5pm, 6pm and 11pm; followed by long shot of anchor desk, theme music (described above) and "Portions of the Program Pre-Recorded" lower-third

Promo for Kennedy & Company, with co-host Susan Peterson(?) and host Bob Kennedy previewing interview with former Health, Education and Welfare assistant secretary James Farmer (a co-founder of CORE), and why he left his post, for 7:00am - 8:30am

Commercial: United Airlines - "When you're friendly you do things for people" - "Roomier 5-across Coach seating" (ending voiceover by Al Parker)

Incomplete snippet of commercial start before the videotape that this kinescope recording was made from had ended.

This aired on local Chicago TV on Tuesday, January 26th 1971 during the 10:00pm to 10:30pm timeframe.

About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:

The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,700+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:
