1. Safety Muscle of the Larynx

Posterior cricoarytenoid is called the “safety muscle of the larynx” because it is the only abductor of the vocal cords.

2. Tensor vs. Relaxer 🎵

Cricothyroid is the only tensor of the vocal cords, increasing pitch,
while thyroarytenoid and vocalis act as relaxers, lowering the pitch.

3. Nerve Supply Exception

All intrinsic muscles are supplied by the recurrent laryngeal nerve
except cricothyroid, which is supplied by the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve.

4. Interarytenoids Are Unique

The transverse arytenoid is the only unpaired intrinsic muscle
and, along with oblique arytenoids, closes the posterior rima glottidis during phonation.

5. Voice Modulation Muscles

The vocalis muscle, a part of the thyroarytenoid, fine-tunes the tension of the vocal cords,
allowing subtle modulation of pitch and quality of voice.
