Digging ELECAMPANE: LUNG & DIGESTIVE Health Helper (Video Lesson)

It is time to dig roots of this regal medicinal. We’ve had a few hard frosts here in NY making it an ideal time to harvest this powerful herb. I’ll wash, dry, (not dehydrate) and tincture it.

This handsome wild perennial, scientifically called Inula helenium of the Asteraceae, is a strong herbal ally that supports lung health and digestive health. Learn to harvest this aromatic, cleansing, stimulating friend.

Therapeutic Properties:
Elecampane is used to clear phlegm and infections from the upper respiratory system: for coughs, colds, bronchitis, asthma, and more. For dry coughs (or generally dry conditions) I like to combine elecampane with marshmallow, to soothe and soften its drying and potentially irritating effects.

It is also used for stimulating digestive activity: increasing bile production, and digestive enzymes, while easing gas, and supporting bowel movements. Also used as a vermifuge (de-wormer).

Cautionary note: Avoid during pregnancy. May cause vomiting and diarrhea in large doses. Please research any new food or medicine, go slowly, learn, and discuss using it with your healthcare provider.

Part used: roots of 2-3 year old plants dug in fall after a few hard frosts. Use it as tea or tincture. Used in aromatic bitters and other alcoholic beverages. Some herbalists use the flowers (not me).

Habitat: Look for elecampane in rich, moist, but well drained soil, in full sun to part shade, in fields, roadsides, anthropogenic sites. USDA zones 3-8.

Range: Native of Europe and Western Asia. Naturalized in North America. I suggest planting elecampane if you don’t have any in your area.

Dimensions: Height: 4-7 ft.; Width 2-3 ft.
