What’s your favorite regimental tartan? We did this slide show to showcase a few of the most famous and popular Regimental Tartans used by units of the British Army. This is just the tip of the iceberg though. Since the 18th century, regiments have use a variety of tartans, and units have come and gone, disbanded and reformed. You'll note that a large number of the tartans here cite the date of 1881 as an inception of a Regiment, this is because a massive reorganization of the army was done in that year - many new regiments were raised, or created by merging older units.

Black Watch
Used by many different regiments
First used by the 42nd (royal Highland) Regiment.
Renamed ‘Black Watch’ in 1881

Stewart Hunting
Used by the Royal Scots (Royal Regiment)
Formed in 1633 and was active until 2006

MacKenzie
Used by Seaforth Highlanders
Formed in 1881 and active until 1961

Gordon
Used by Gordon Highlanders
Formed in 1881 and was active until 1994

Cameron Of Erracht
Used by Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders
Formed in 1793 and was active until 1961

Royal Stewart
The tartan was created in 1832.
Worn by the Royal Guard and Pipers.
Due to its popularity, many now wear this as a Universal tartan, regardless of clan.
