Glycated hemoglobin, also called haemoglobin A1c test provides average blood glucose levels of an individual for over past 8 to 12 weeks. HbA1c test is used by healthcare professionals to diagnose prediabetes and diabetes. It is also helpful in preparing or modifying an individual’s diabetes treatment plan. This test is usually offered to individuals who are 35 years of age or older, overweight or obese, have chronic diabetes, or have other comorbid conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. The HbA1c test is performed when symptoms such as frequent thirst or hunger, frequent urination, numbness or tingling of hands and feet, slow healing of cuts, etc., are observed in an individual. Individuals taking the test should fast for 8-10 hours before the test. A blood sample is drawn from a vein in the hand and is sent to the laboratory for testing. A value less than 5.7% is typically considered normal. Values over the usual range may indicate diabetes in an individual.
