Columbia is the State Capital of South Carolina. Columbia is the second largest city in South Carolina behind Charleston with a population of a little under 132,000 people. Columbia is also the county seat of Richland County even though a portion of the city extends into Lexington County. The area that is now called Columbia were inhabited by the Congaree, Native Americans. The South Carolina General Assembly in 1786 created Columbia which was important to the overall development for the State of South Carolina. So in 1786 , the assembly created the new Capital. The assembly would then take a vote for the name of the City. State Senator, John Lewis Gervais of the town ninety six suggested the name Columbia because he stated that he hoped that in this town we should find refuge under the wings of Columbia...Another legislator suggested Washington but after the vote - Columbia was selected with a 11-7 vote.
