What You'll Need

Step 1: Section Hair

Start off by brushing all the hair back and making a section on the top part of the head. Draw section lines back from the ends of the eyes and wrap it around the top of the head. 

If you have fine hair, make a bigger section so that there's more to work with. Clip away the bottom and side hair so that it's out of the way. 

Step 2: Add Extensions (Optional)

If you have thick, long hair that's easy to work with, you can skip this step. Otherwise, it may help to add two rows of extensions to make your hair thicker and add body to the look. 

First brush the top section straight up and gather it together. Then create a perimeter section on each side. You'll use this to hide the bases of the extensions when you pull the hair into a ponytail. 

Inside of the perimeter section on one side, take a thin strip of hair and tightly tease down the base. Then clip a hair extension onto the roots of the section, using the teased hair as a foundation. 

Repeat on the other side, remembering to create a perimeter strip of hair on the outside. 

Step 3: Make a Ponytail

Pull all of the hair in the top section up and incorporate it together, including the extensions if you have them. The perimeter strips will cover up the bases of the extensions when the hair is gathered up. 

Use a soft brush and a shine hair spray to smooth out any frizziness in the hair. 

Make a ponytail out of the section and place it at the very center of the head. Use two clear rubber hair bands to secure it in place. This will be the base of the bow. 

Step 4: Divide and Tease Ponytail

Section the ponytail into two pieces. Then take a small piece from each side to make a third, smaller section in the back. 

You should have two large sections on each side and a small section down the back. Leave the small section hanging down in the back. You'll use it at the end to make the middle part of the bow. 

Now subdivide each of the larger sections of the ponytail and then tease them all over. Don't worry about the ponytail getting too messy, since you'll smooth it down later. Make sure to create lots of volume on each side.

Step 5: Make a Bow

Then go through the sides with a soft brush and smooth the hair into shape. Hold a side in your hand and brush over the top all the way to the ends. 

Tip: If your hair's really frizzy, try spraying some light hair spray onto your brush and then brush over the hair. This will catch more of the flyaways and reduce the frizziness.

Then pinch the end of the hair in your hand and start wrapping it around your hand. Keep wrapping until the hair makes a rounded curl like a bow. 

Slide it into the ponytail and use bobby pins to secure the bow down into the base. Pinch and pin the bow into shape over the base. 

Repeat this on the other section of the ponytail. Match the shape and size of the one you already finished. 

Step 6: Final Touches

When both sides of the bow have been secured to the base, flip the back tail over the middle of the bow. Wrap it over the center and then around the base to cover all the bobby pins and bring together the bow. Then secure it in the back with a bobby pin. 

Finish the look with hair spray over the bow to keep it in place.
