Members of the Egyptian diaspora staged a protest outside the BBC headquarters in Manchester, demanding the release of political detainees held in Egyptian prisons.

Demonstrators chanted for the immediate release of both male and female prisoners and called for freedom for all detainees.

They held up photographs of prominent prisoners including Alaa Abd el-Fattah, Somaya Maher, Ahmed Aref, and Sayed Mosagheb – all of whom are currently imprisoned by the government of Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

Protesters also called for the release of poet Abdelrahman Youssef, who is reportedly being held in the United Arab Emirates.

The demonstration was part of a wider series of events organised by the Egyptian community in the United Kingdom.

These initiatives aim to pressure the Egyptian government and the international community to take action and release those held in what rights groups describe as inhumane conditions, placing detainees at risk of slow death.
