Cristiano Ronaldo’s Club Plans Visit to Turkmenistan.
DAYANCH Human Rights Platform Calls on Them to Cancel the Trip
According to open sources, Cristiano Ronaldo’s club is planning to arrive in Turkmenistan on February 10–11 to take part in football events.
The civil movement DAYANCH — Turkmenistan has issued public appeals to FIFA and personally to Cristiano Ronaldo, urging them to reconsider and refrain from traveling.
Human rights defenders state that football events in the country are being used by the authorities as a tool of propaganda and distraction from the harsh social and political reality, while systematic human rights violations continue.
What DAYANCH highlights
In its appeals, DAYANCH stresses that behind the “festive” image lies:
• pressure on students, who are forced to prepare crowds and work at stadiums at night and in cold conditions
• restrictions on freedom of speech and persecution of government critics
• restrictions on freedom of movement and family reunification
• refusal to issue passports abroad, leaving migrants vulnerable
• risk of travel bans upon return to the country
• harsh detention conditions and lack of an independent judiciary
• reports of violence in the women’s prison colony in Dashoguz
• discrimination based on region, language and ethnicity
• deteriorating infrastructure in the regions, contrasted with the “showcase” glamour of Ashgabat and the city of Arkadag
• extremely low wages and pensions, along with the cancellation of the annual 10% increase in 2026
Human rights advocates believe that the arrival of a global football star and the holding of major matches under such conditions effectively “legitimizes” a repressive system and creates an illusion of well-being.
A separate concern: disappearance of activists
DAYANCH also reminded the public about the disappearance in July 2025 of Turkmen civil activists
Alisher Sakhadov and Abdulla Orusov, who went missing after leaving a deportation camp in Edirne, Türkiye.
Their fate remains unknown.
In addition, dozens of activists reportedly live under the threat of abduction, while Umida Bekdzhanova continues to be held in a deportation camp.
Position of the Human Rights Platform
DAYANCH stresses:
Football must not become an instrument of repression, propaganda, or cover-up for human rights violations.
The organization calls on:
— FIFA to assess the situation
— athletes and clubs not to support repressive practices
— the international community not to turn a blind eye
Human rights defenders emphasize that their position is not directed against sport or players — it is about protecting people and their rights.
