It stormed like crazy all night last night, but we slept surprisingly well in our zero-star accommodations at the Marriott Hotel! We packed up our stealth camp early and hoped for a quick exit, but more heavy rains and technical difficulties delayed our departure.
Eric, "Scooter_Chef", was having problems with his Garmin zūmo 396 incorrectly displaying the TrickTracks route (or not at all). I have the same GPS, so I borrowed a laptop to copy my track file to Eric's SD card to resolve the problem. Eric decided to ride along with us today and suffer at our snail's pace, but he eventually tired of that and rocketed ahead to the finish line! 🤣
Our morning bike maintenance and safety checks went a bit slower than usual due to the rain, but we finally managed to hit the road around 8:30 AM. The ride around the Great lakes was slow, windy, and wet. We finally found clear weather after crossing the Mackinac Bridge, but the winds never died down... 25-30 MPH winds in our faces all day long!
We arrived at the finish line in Marshfield, Wisconsin, around 8:15 PM. There were a bunch of locals that turned out for the event because it was advertised in their local media. We had a great chat with a local helicopter pilot who is a huge Super Cub fan, and he even rode his own 1982 Honda Passport to the meet. He suggested we camp indoors at the local airport FBO because it was shut down after hours and wasn't used during the night except by other local pilots and emergency personnel. He said it wouldn't be a problem... "Pilots do it all the time!"
So, we rode about 2 miles away to the airport, parked on the side of the main building, and proceeded to unpack all of our wet camping gear to dry out overnight. We went inside the main building and used the facilities, brushed our teeth, and promptly crashed out on the floor... dead tired. About 30 minutes later, we heard the sound of police radios and a couple of voices saying, "Hello, who is in here?" Uh-oh... it's the PO-PO! 🤣
We had a nice little chat, exchanged our information, and then we were escorted from the premises. The officers were very polite and understanding, and they were very interested in our Super Cubs and the Scooter Cannonball Run. The airport owner had seen us on the security cameras and requested that we be escorted off the property.
Oh, well... we found other stealth camping accommodations for the night even closer to the hotel. 🤣👍
