Arrecife is the capital of the island of Lanzarote and is located on the east coast, roughly halfway along the length of the island.
It was once a small fishing village and is now a tourist town of almost 60,000 inhabitants.
It owes its name to the black volcanic cliffs behind which the fishing boats hid from pirates.
