In today’s video I’m going to show you how to clear the cache in Windows 11.
Clearing your computer’s cache in Windows 11 can boost performance, free up disk space, and improve system responsiveness.
Regular cache clearing helps maintain system health, and prevents minor issues from accumulating, making your computer run more efficiently.
To get started:
1. Go into the Windows start bar, and type in “File Explorer” and click on the “File Explorer” search result.
2. Once file explorer opens up, click on the “Local disk” C: drive item on the left hand side of the window.
3. Now double click on the “Windows” folder.
4. Now double click on the “Software Distribution” folder.
5. This folder contains lots of temporary files and information about Windows updates. You’ll want to select all of these folders and files, and delete them.
6. Deleting these files is perfectly fine because if Windows ever needs any of them, it’ll automatically download them.
7. Now for the next step, click on the back button, and look for the “Temp” folder, and double click on it to open it up.
8. This folder contains temporary files created and used by applications and processes. Temporary files are usually deleted automatically when programs are closed. However, if automatic removal doesn't happen, these files can build up and take up disk space, which can affect performance.
9. Now select all of the files and folders, and delete them.
10. Now for the next step, go into the Windows start bar, type in “Command Prompt” and right click on the command prompt search result, and click the “Run as administrator” option.
11. Once command prompt opens up, type in “ipconfig /flushdns”, and hit the enter key on your keyboard.
12. This command flushes the DNS cache on Windows, also known as the domain name system.
13. Now for the next steps, go into the Windows start bar, and type in “Run”, and click on the “Run” application to open it up.
14. Once Run open up, type in the word “%temp%”, and hit the enter key on your keyboard.
15. This file explorer window will now open up.
16. This folder is different to the previously viewed temp folder. This folder stores temporary files created by applications and processes on your computer for the current user.
17. Select all of the files in this folder, and press the delete key on your keyboard to delete them.
18. Now for the next step, go into the Windows start bar again, and type in “Run”, and click on the Run application to open it up.
19. Now type in “wsreset”, and hit the enter key on your keyboard.
20. WS Reset is a built-in Windows tool that clears the Microsoft Store cache and resets its settings.
21. Now close the Microsoft Store application.
22. For the next step, open up Google Chrome, and click on the three dots in the top right corner, and then click on the “Settings” menu option located at the bottom of the dropdown menu.
23. Once the settings page opens up, click on the “Privacy and security” menu item on the left hand side of the screen.
24. Now from this page, click on the “Delete browsing data” menu option.
25. A delete browsing data modal will now display.
26. From this modal, ensure that the “Cached images and files” checkbox is checked, and the others are unchecked.
27. Now from the time range drop down field, click on it, and select the “All time” option, as we would like to delete all cached images and files from Chrome.
28. Now click on the “Delete data” button.
29. All cache in Google Chrome will now be deleted.
30. Now for the final step, go into the Windows start bar, and type in “Disk Cleanup”, and click on the “Disk Cleanup” search result.
31. The Disk cleanup application will now open.
32. Disk cleanup is beneficial for maintaining performance and freeing up storage. By removing temporary files, system cache, and other unnecessary data, Disk Cleanup frees up valuable disk space, allowing the system to run faster and more efficiently.
33. Now, select all of the files from the list, and click on the “Clean Up System Files” button.
34. Windows will now delete all of the unwanted files from your computer and free up disk space on your hard drive.
And it’s as easy as that, clearing all cache in Windows 11 is a fairly simple task to perform.
