Ohio residents have already faced potential shock when they received their energy bill, as several factors are contributing to rising costs.

The summer's high temperatures, which included 19 days above 90 degrees, have increased energy demand. Additionally, prices on the PJM electric market, where Ohio utilities purchase energy, have risen by 22%. These increased costs are passed on to consumers.

The last point PJM has denied. PJM reached out to Local 12 News directly they said this is incorrect information from Duke Energy. Jeffrey Shields, Sr. Manager of PJM communications, said the 22% price increase relates to the results of the most recent capacity market auction for the 2026/2027 delivery year, which don’t go into effect until June 1, 2026. Capacity is a small percentage of the wholesale cost of energy, which PJM sets through its competitive markets. PJM does not set retail prices; that is set by your local utility. Capacity represents only a small percentage of a consumer’s utility bill.
