I don’t think many of us realize how the works of Alexander Graham Bell really impacted the lives of Deaf people (and still today) ranging from language deprivation, Deaf identity struggles, and the abuse of trying to make Deaf people into someone we never will be- a hearing person. He saw deafness as a threat. He wanted to prevent Deaf people marrying other Deaf people because that would mean more Deaf babies would be born and it would “create a deaf race which will cause problems on earth.” So his two big ideas (out of several) were to stop Deaf schools which includes not allowing Deaf people teach Deaf students and the second was do not allow Deaf marry Deaf. He preferred the oral method for deaf people and said sign language will cause deaf people to not thrive in society. All of these still look somewhat familiar with how some people think today, eh?

People may know him as the inventor of the telephone (note: he wasn’t the first person to come up with this idea, but the first person to get a patent on it), but he also was an oppressor-wanting to get rid of Deaf people. No, I cannot weigh down the full burden on AGB but he amplified this and other people who followed his work or believed in his work are also accountable (I.e. Milan 1880). His own mother was hard of hearing, and his wife was deaf. He interacted with some Deaf people, studied us, wrote about us, etc. A wolf in sheep’s clothing you could say. His work was deemed as credible because he was a inventor, scholar, and researcher. Amazing how much mind-poison from him and his minions continue to bleed in our society today. Clearly he didn’t achieve with erasing out Deaf people because deafness always finds a way. :) I’m proud of our community and how far we have come.
