Today we’ll look at how to set up your WYZE camera so you can record footage on your PC or Network Video Recorder using RTSP or Real Time Streaming Protocol.
As you have probably seen, the Wyze cameras have gained a lot of popularity doing to their easy of setup, tiny size and fantastic price point. Wyze is allowing us to take their connectivity a few steps further by opening up the camera’s configuration so we can record our footage on computers or Network Video Records or NVRs or DVRs.
For me, my computer and NVR stores footage for 10 days. I also like just going to one central location to see all my cameras at once and not have to open multiple apps.
I’ll show you how to enable this configuration on your Wyze cameras. It’s not something available on the camera when you buy it. I’ll then show how to setup recording footage on Blue Iris. You could use any software that supports RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol), like iSpy or Zoneminder. I’ll then connect my Wyze camera to record on my Hikvision NVR. Lastly, I’ll show how to revert the Wyze cam’s software on the camera to disable the RTSP feature.
1. In order to use the streaming feature from the Wyze cam, we’ll need to update or flash the camera’s firmware. Wyze cam has 2 versions of the firmware; the regular one that is installed on the camera when you buy it and the RTSP version. Maintaining both firmware versions is a lot of work, so they don’t release as many updates for the less popular RTSP version. To do this firmware switch, we’ll need to download the latest version of the RTSP software. I’ll add a link to this page in the description. (download the zip file, open the downloads folder, open the zip file and copy the firmware, paste it in a new folder on my computer) While I am at it, I’ll download the latest version of the non-RTSP firmware so I can revert back. (Go to that link, download the zip file, open the downloads folder, open the zip file, copy the bin and paste it in a special location)

2. To see which version of the Wyze app you are currently running, open the Wyze app, selecting the camera, click the gear icon in the upper right, and scroll down to Device Info. 4.9.5.36

Let’s jump over to Blue Iris and add the camera to a channel.
Here is a quick sound quality test. Here is the sound from the app. And the sound through BI. Hardly any difference.

Using this Hikvision NVR, let’s add the camera to a channel. The NVR is connected to my home network and has an IP address on the same subnet as the camera.
Here we add the camera to the NVR
The NVR does not pick up the audio and when I try to see if it’s included in the main video stream, I get a message saying the function isn’t supported. Hopefully this is something that can be fixed in a future NVR firmware update.

Switching the camera’s firmware back to the latest copy of the standard version is the same process. Rename the file, drop it onto a micro SD card and start up the camera. In the app, you cannot just check for updates to get the latest non-RTSP firmware, you have to switch the firmware, then check for updates.
