Sean Yom and Hind Ahmed Zaki explore the many challenges for democratic and social change in the region in their presentation, "Democracy and Gender in the Middle East and North Africa."

Yom, associate professor of Political Science at Temple University, is a specialist on regimes and governance in the Middle East, especially in Arab monarchies like Jordan, Kuwait and Morocco. Zaki, assistant professor of Political Science at the University of Connecticut with a joint appointment in the department of Language, Culture, and Literature, is a specialist in comparative politics with emphasis on gender and politics and the Middle East and North Africa.
