STORY LINE:
Talks between China and Taiwan on food safety are set to go ahead after a statement was released by the mainland's office for Taiwan Affairs in Beijing on Wednesday.
The mainland's most senior official, Chen Yunlin, will visit Taiwan at the end of this year and food safety will be one of the topics on his agenda, according to the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office spokesman.
The two sides will try to reach consensus on the food safety issue during the visit of Chen Yunlin, the chairman of the semi-official Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS).
Some other topics including postal, transport links will also be discussed during the consultations.
Chen told reporters earlier last month that he will visit Taiwan by the end of the year.
Taiwan's opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), has warned of organising massive campaign to protest Chen's visit to Taiwan.
The opposition party said the recent "poisonous milk" imported from China has already stirred public emotions against the government and have led to renewed animosity toward rival China and raising doubts about Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou's push for closer economic ties with the mainland.
ARATS' Taiwanese counterpart, the Straits Exchange Foundation, said Taiwan will send a delegation of six food and health experts to Beijing on Saturday to better understand the milk contamination.
"The two sides will also discuss establishing a food and health safety mechanism," the Foundation said in a statement.
Taiwan and China split amid civil war in 1949, and Beijing still claims the island as part of its territory.
