Replacing a car's clock spring involves disconnecting the battery, removing the steering wheel after detaching the airbag, then swapping the old clock spring with a new one before reassembling the steering wheel and re-powering the vehicle. This process must be done with the steering wheel and front wheels aligned straight to ensure the new component is properly centered. It is a complex procedure, and many sources recommend professional replacement due to the risks associated with handling the airbag.  

Safety and preparation

Disconnect the battery: 

Disconnect both the negative and positive battery terminals and wait at least 15 minutes for the system to discharge before starting. 

Align wheels: 

Make sure the steering wheel and the vehicle's front wheels are perfectly straight to align the new clock spring correctly. 

Removing the old clock spring

Remove the airbag: 

On the back of the steering wheel, loosen the bolts or screws (often 10mm) holding the airbag in place. Carefully disconnect the airbag and horn electrical connectors, then set the airbag assembly aside. 

Remove the steering wheel: 

Disconnect any other wiring, like the cruise control connector. Loosen and remove the central nut, then mark the steering wheel's position relative to the shaft before pulling it off. A steering wheel puller may be necessary. 

Access and remove the clock spring: 

Remove any plastic steering column covers. Unscrew the old clock spring assembly, disconnect its electrical connectors, and lift it away. 

Installing the new clock spring

Center the new clock spring: 

Before installation, ensure the new clock spring is also centered. It will have a peg that aligns with a hole on the steering wheel's column to ensure correct orientation. 

Reinstall and reconnect: 

Secure the new clock spring with its screws, then reconnect all electrical connectors. 

Reinstall the steering wheel: 

Align the marks you made, slide the wheel back onto the shaft, and secure it with the central nut. Tighten the nut to the manufacturer's specified torque. 

Reinstall the airbag: 

Reconnect the airbag and horn connectors, then carefully place the airbag assembly back into the steering wheel and tighten its bolts. 

Final steps

Reconnect the battery terminals.

Start the vehicle and test all functions, including the horn, turn signals, and cruise control. Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to ensure all functions work and no warning lights are on the dashboard.
