SOUTH DEERING:

South Deering, situated on Chicago's far South Side, is the largest among the city's 77 official community areas. While primarily an industrial hub, a small residential neighborhood can be found in the northeastern corner, and Lake Calumet occupies a substantial portion of the area. Approximately 80% of the community area is zoned for industrial purposes, natural wetlands, or recreational parks, with the remaining 20% designated for residential and small-scale commercial uses. South Deering is within the 10th Ward, historically associated with Alderman Edward Vrdolyak, an ally of former Mayor Richard J. Daley.

The neighborhood derives its name from Charles Deering, an executive from the Deering Harvester Company, which later became a significant component of International Harvester. Notably, International Harvester owned Wisconsin Steel, established in 1875 and located along Torrence Avenue, spanning from south of 106th Street to 109th Street.

South Deering boasts the iconic Calumet Fisheries, a historic seafood restaurant in operation since 1928, which gained fame through its appearance on Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations." The original Calumet Bakery store, a cherished South Side establishment since 1935, is situated at 2510 E 106th St, Chicago, IL 60617. The neighborhood also housed the Wisconsin Steel Works, initially known as the Joseph H. Brown Iron and Steel Company, established in 1875 and ceased operations in 1980. Unfortunately, the neighborhood has grappled with economic challenges since the steel mill's closure.

Louis Rosen extensively documented the racial transition of South Deering and nearby communities in his 1998 book, "The South Side: The Racial Transformation of an American Neighborhood."
