The main villains in this storyline are the members of the Stark gang, comprised of the father, Pa Stark, and his five sons. The characters were clearly modelled after the real-life "Ma" Barker and her four hoodlum sons, one of whom was killed with his mother during a 1935 FBI raid on their hideout. The extent of Ma's actual involvement in her sons' gangland activities is unclear, but the press of the time, with the encouragement of J. Edgar Hoover, had a field day painting her as the ruthless head of a vicious crime family.
