Nansen grew up in Kristiania, which is now known as Oslo. He was passionate about spending time in the nature, developing his survival and skiing skills. He broke a world record in skating and was a champion of his country in cross-country 12 times.

Nansen is considered one of the founders of modern neurology, as his studies concentrated on central nervous system of lower marine creatures. He went on a voyage to Greenland and observed that it was possible to explore Greenland’s icecap, something which was never done before.

Once his expedition started, he destroyed his means of transport and left himself bereft of choice to go back. He managed to go from east to west of Greenland.

After that successful expedition, Nansen decided to go to the North Pole, but was left stranded and had to survive by killing bears and walruses.

Nansen played an instrumental role in Norway’s independence. He persuaded prince of Denmark to become Norway’s first king.

When WWI came, Nansen represented his country in League of Nations and concentrated on humanitarian works. He tried to reduce famine and created a special document called the Nansen Passport, for every stateless person and POW without documentation.

He received a Nobel Peace Prize in 1922.
