There are typically four types of twin pregnancies, each with its own unique characteristics.

Firstly, we have diamniotic and dichorionic twins. Diamniotic refers to twins who have separate amniotic sacs, meaning that each baby has its own protective environment. Dichorionic indicates that these twins have two separate placentas. This type of pregnancy is considered the safest and is often observed when two embryos successfully develop during in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments.

The second type is diamniotic monocorionic twins. In this case, the twins also have two amniotic sacs, but they share a single placenta. As they are in separate sacs, the babies cannot harm each other.

The third type is monoamniotic monocorionic twins, where both babies share a single amniotic sac and placenta. This type of pregnancy is the most complex and carries higher risks. With the babies in the same sac, there is a greater potential for complications such as twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, where one twin receives more blood flow than the other. The closeness of the babies in the same sac can lead to challenges and concerns.

Apart from these types, we have conjoined twins, a rare occurrence where the separation of the embryos happens late, resulting in the babies being physically connected to each other. Conjoined twins can have various configurations, such as sharing a head or having a single stomach with two heads. This type of twin pregnancy is considered the most challenging and often requires medical intervention if identified early on.

Determining the type of pregnancy is crucial, and early pregnancy scans play a vital role in providing valuable information to doctors. If a monoamniotic monocorionic pregnancy is detected, extra vigilance is necessary. In the case of conjoined twins, medical professionals typically intervene and prevent the pregnancy from progressing further.
