The Toyosu Fish Market in Tokyo is the largest fish market in the world — but the wholesale floor is strictly off-limits to the public. We managed to sneak inside and witness the high-stakes seafood action that only licensed professionals ever get to see.

From tuna auctions to backroom knife deals, this is the side of Toyosu that tourists never experience.

In 2018, the legendary Tsukiji Inner Market officially relocated to Toyosu, a state-of-the-art facility built on reclaimed land in Tokyo Bay. Costing over $5 billion USD, Toyosu was designed to modernize Japan’s seafood industry with temperature-controlled trading floors, hygiene protocols, and restricted access. While it lacks the gritty charm of old Tsukiji, it’s where the real business happens now — including the world-famous tuna auctions that can hit millions of dollars per fish.

What We Saw & Did:
Witnessed frozen and fresh bluefin tuna being sliced and sold at insane prices
Got up close with master vendors slicing tuna like art
Bought some of the fattiest otoro we’ve ever tasted
Shopped for handcrafted sushi knives at specialty stores nearby
