ফেনীর সোনাগাজীতে সমুদ্র উপকূলীয় বিস্তৃর্ণ চরাঞ্চল বছরের পর বছর অনাবাদি থাকলেও বর্তমানে সেখানে তরমুজ চাষ হচ্ছে। গত দুই বছর বাণিজ্যিকভাবে এখানে তরমুজ চাষ করে লাভবান হওয়ায় বেড়েছে তরমুজের আবাদ। সড়ক ব্যবস্থার উন্নতি ও বাজারজাতকরণে সুবিধা থাকায় এখানকার সুস্বাদু মিষ্টি তরমুজ চলে যাচ্ছে দেশের বিভিন্ন জেলার ভোক্তাদের কাছে।
সরেজমিনে দেখা যায়, সোনাগাজীর চরাঞ্চলে যুগের পর যুগ অনাবাদি থাকা জনমানবহীন বিস্তৃর্ণ ভূমি এখন তরমুজ চাষে সবুজ ভূমিতে পরিণত হয়েছে। উপজেলার চরদরবেশ, চরছান্দিয়া ও সোনাগাজী সদর ইউনিয়নে যতদূর চোখ যাবে ততটুকুতেই দেখা মিলবে তরমুজের আবাদ। নোয়াখালীর সুবর্ণচর ও কোম্পানীগঞ্জ থেকে তরমুজ চাষ করতে আসা কৃষকরা ক্ষেতের মাঝেই ‘টংঘর’ স্থাপন করে থাকা-খাওয়া আর বিশ্রাম করছেন।
