Big City Tattoo (2020)

A unique tattoo shop in the North Park area keeps a Samoan tradition alive. Su’a Sulu’ape Angela, owner of Big City Tattoo, is the first known woman in 5000 years to be trained in the ancient art of Samoan Tatau (traditional hand-tap). Shop apprentice Mike Jonez talks about what inspired his artistic career. These conversations reveal what makes Big City Tattoo unique, and the kind of impact it has had on the North Park area. By sharing cultural insights about the art of traditional hand-tap tatau, we discover truths about tattoo shops and disprove misconceptions people may have about tattoos.
