Convict Cichlid | Care Guide & Species Profile

Today's video is care guide and species profile on the Convict cichlid. I have a female convict in my 75 gallon classroom aquarium, and its one of my favorite cichlids.

We currently have a Convict, Jack Dempsey, Salvini, and a Green Terror in this aquarium. Although they stay smaller, convict cichlids can hold their own in this tank, and they match any of their tank mates aggression.

Convicts are one of the most hardy fish in the hobby and they stay small for a cichlid, so they make for a great beginner fish if you have a 30+ gallon aquarium. Just be extra careful when it comes to breeding convicts. If you have a male and female in your tank, they will breed at a very young age, do it often, and become extra territorial to any tank mates.

Local fish stores may not take in the extra convict fry due to the robust supply, so just be sure you have a plan if you are breeding convicts.
