What Is A Bakroe?

A Bakroe in Sranan Tongo is a mythical creature and spiritual entity from Surinamese and Guyanese folklore. It is described as a monstrosity with large head, half wood, half flesh, on a short neck and the teeth extending outside its large mouth. The head encompasses half of the body. Where the total length of the body is 3 feet. Bakroes are also described as short men with big eyes, long arms and legs, with the striking feature that they lack kneecaps.

In the various tori's (stories) in which a bakroe appears, a distinction is made between the 'wild bakroe' and working bakroe (wroko-bakroe). The wild bakroe would infest the neighborhood from abandoned houses, on street corners, under bridges or in tubes of ditches and creeks (kokro-bakroe).

The wroko bakroe would then be under the influence of market vendors or other successful entrepreneurs who act as bosses over the bakeries. That influence would have a beneficial effect on the success of the company, because bakroes exert an invisible attraction on customers. We will share a famous local fascinating torie with you.

The word bakroe is said to be derived from Yoruba word: Abiku from West-Africa.
