❓ How are the tests done?

I’ve put 10 different ransomware files in this folder on a virtual machine. Then, I scanned it with 4 different antiviruses, with real-time protection turned off. Oh, and I also checked the NordVPN Threat protection feature. All of these providers claim to be able to catch ransomware – can they really? And how does the process look?

To test TotalAV vs Ransomware, I’ve set up the scan on the Ransomware folder and… all 10 files were instantly detected. The scan took a few more seconds to finish, and then I was able to quarantine the files.

I actually have a bit of a problem with this - since I can only handle the ransomware AFTER the scan, this creates a time frame for malware to act. But this was a quick scan, not a thorough one, so it’s not a huge issue.

Does Norton have ransomware protection? Yes, it does, but let’s run the Norton vs ransomware test. I’ve turned off its real-time protection and set up a custom scan. A few clicks to get to it, but it’s nothing too hard. Once the scan is running, you can see the files disappearing from the folder - the detection is quick, and the files are instantly quarantined. I don’t have anything to nitpick here.

Next up - Bitdefender against ransomware testing. Once I clicked to scan, the detection was instantaneous. Just like with TotalAV, I had to choose to delete these files myself. The removal was faster than with TotalAV though, the whole process from start to finish took about a minute.

Surfshark antivirus vs ransomware testing also yielded very positive results. The scan was the quickest from this whole review - and I am happy to see that all the files were automatically quarantined, I just had to choose to delete them. The only weird thing is, it found 12 out of 10 files. Yep, twelve, it seemed to have detected one of the files 3 times. A bit weird, but it doesn’t do any damage, nor does it slow the scan down.

Now, how does NordVPN protect against ransomware? After all, it doesn’t have a separate antivirus tool. Well, their Threat protection feature recently received a boost to act as real-time protection. This way, I can check if it catches the files as I'm downloading them. The Threat Protection managed to catch all of the files and instantly deleted them too, leaving no time for the malware to act.

Even with all of the best antivirus vs ransomware on windows 11 tests complete, the answer is a bit tricky, since all of these options scored 10/10. All of them will do the job - but personally, I favor the performance of Norton against ransomware, as well as Surfshark Antivirus and NordVPN Threat protection. Mostly because they quarantine the ransomware files instantly, leaving no space for them to do damage.
