. In this video, we explore how Sun Yat-sen tried to redesign China’s economy, why his ideas were radical for their time, and how his legacy still shapes China today.
🇨🇳 China at the Edge of Collapse
By the late 19th century, China was in crisis.
The Qing Empire was weak, corrupt, and technologically behind Western powers. Foreign nations controlled ports, trade, and even Chinese territory. The economy was largely agrarian, inefficient, and unable to compete with industrialized countries.
China wasn’t just losing wars—it was losing sovereignty.
Many Chinese reformers believed small adjustments could save the empire. Sun Yat-sen believed the entire system had to go.
🔥 From Doctor to Revolutionary
Sun Yat-sen was trained as a medical doctor, but quickly became convinced that China’s sickness was political and economic, not physical.
He traveled widely across Asia, Europe, and the United States, studying Western governments, industries, and financial systems. What he saw convinced him that China needed:
A modern state
Industrial development
Land reform
National control of key resources
Rather than patching the old empire, Sun wanted to build a republic from scratch.
📜 The Three Principles of the People
At the heart of Sun Yat-sen’s vision were his famous Three Principles of the People:
Nationalism – Ending foreign domination and restoring Chinese sovereignty
Democracy – Replacing imperial rule with a republican system
People’s Livelihood – Creating economic justice and modernization
The third principle—people’s livelihood—was essentially an economic revolution.
Sun believed political freedom meant nothing without economic reform.
🌾 Land Reform: Breaking the Old System
One of Sun’s boldest ideas was land reform.
At the time, much of China’s land was controlled by wealthy landlords, while peasants lived in poverty and debt. Sun proposed:
Equalizing land ownership
Taxing land based on value
Redistributing unused land
He believed this would:
Reduce inequality
Increase productivity
Create social stability
In many ways, his ideas predicted later communist land reforms—but Sun imagined achieving them within a democratic system, not through class warfare.
🏭 State-Led Industrialization
Sun Yat-sen didn’t trust private markets alone to modernize China.
He believed the government should lead massive infrastructure projects, including:
Railways across the country
Modern ports and shipping systems
Mining and heavy industry
Energy production
Sun envisioned a China connected by transportation networks and powered by modern industry—similar to how the US and Europe had industrialized.
To him, economic strength was national survival.
🪙 Controlling Key Industries
Sun also proposed that major industries should be owned or regulated by the state, especially:
Railroads
Natural resources
Utilities
Large-scale manufacturing
He feared that leaving these sectors to private or foreign control would keep China dependent and weak.
This mixed system—combining markets with strong state involvement—resembles the economic model China later adopted in the late 20th century.
🌍 A China That Could Compete Globally
Sun’s ultimate goal was not isolation.
He wanted China to become a strong, modern nation that could compete with Western powers on equal footing.
He believed modernization required:
Education reform
Technical training
Scientific development
Global trade
China, in his vision, would remain culturally Chinese but economically modern.
⚔️ Revolution and Limited Power
In 1911, the Qing Dynasty collapsed, and China became a republic. Sun Yat-sen was named provisional president.
But his control was weak.
In this video, you’ll learn:
Why China’s old economy was collapsing
How Sun Yat-sen imagined a modern economic system
His plans for land reform and industrialization
Why his vision never fully materialized
How his ideas shaped modern China
