Jute is one of the main cash crops of Bangladesh. Products made from jute fiber are exported to different countries of the world, which play an important role in the country's economy. Jute ginning is a laborious and complex process, usually carried out in several steps. This process is described in detail in the following steps.
Step 1: Cutting the jute: -
Selection of right time: - Jute plants usually mature at 4-5 months of age. If the lower leaves of the plant are yellow and the top of the plant is hard, it means that it is time to cut the jute.
Cutting method: The jute plant is cut about 10-15 cm above the ground. In this case scissors or sharp weapons are used
Step 2: Bundling the jute: -
Bunching: After cutting the jute plants, 10-15 plants are bundled together to make bundles. The bundles are usually tied with rope or jute fibers.
Jute tying: During jute tying, the lower and upper parts of the plants are kept level so that they can be easily processed during the next step of soaking in water.
Step 3: Soak or soak in water
Selection of place: A place like river, canal, pond or reservoir is selected for soaking jute bundles in water. Soaking in clean and waste-free water improves the fiber quality of jute.
Soaking period: Usually 10-15 days immersed in water. If the water movement is good, the process is completed quickly. After immersion in water, the bundles are covered with earth or bricks so that they are completely submerged in water.
Step 4: Removal of fibers:
Extraction of fibers: The soaked jute plants are extracted from the water and the fibers are extracted. The fibers are pulled from the lower part of the plant. With one hand the top part of the plant is held and with the other hand the fiber is pulled out from the lower part.
Skill and Labor: This process requires experienced workers, as removing the fibers requires considerable care and skill. It is a time-consuming task and very labor intensive.
Step 5: Wash and dry the fibers
Washing the fiber: After removing the fiber, it is washed in clean water. It removes dirt and residue from jute fibers.
Drying Method: Clean fibers are spread out on bamboo or ropes to dry in the sun. It takes 2-3 days for complete drying. A well ventilated and sunny place is selected for drying.
Step 6: Storage and Marketing: Making fiber bales: After drying, the jute fibers are bundled together to make big bales. It is prepared for storage and sale in the market.
Quality control of jute: The quality of jute is determined on the basis of fiber length, smoothness and brightness. High quality jute is sold at high prices.
Marketing: Fiber bales are stored and prepared for sale in the market. Different qualities of jute are sold at different prices and are in demand in the international market as well.
Use of modern technology:
Mechanical Methods: At present many places are using mechanical methods to remove jute fibers, such as the use of jute grading machines. It takes less time and labor and the process is completed quickly.
Digital Quality Determination: Digital quality determination of jute in modern methods has ushered in new horizons in the jute industry.
Online Market: Jute is being sold online using modern technology. It has opened up new horizons in the marketing of jute.
Challenges and Prospects of Jute Industry-
Natural calamities: Floods, droughts and other natural calamities cause huge damage to jute cultivation.
Water Pollution: Water pollution hampers jute soaking process and reduces the quality of jute.
Labor shortage: Jute ginning requires a large number of workers, but there is a shortage of skilled workers in many areas.
Possibilities-
Global demand: As jute products are eco-friendly, the demand for them is increasing worldwide.
Government Assistance: The government is providing various assistance to develop the jute industry, such as credit facilities, training and technology development.
Research and Development: Research is being done on improved varieties of jute and modern processing technology, which will help further development of the jute industry.
