Gavin Johnson - The Magic Man

Some would say Gavin Johnson was a flash in the pan, and they have a case, but while he was on the scene in South Africa he had some brilliant moments for Transvaal and the Springboks.

He hit South African rugby like a tornado in 1993 after failing to make an impact at Northern Transvaal. He was so good he took over from Theo van Rensburg as the preferred full back in the Transvaal team at the end of the season while van Rensburg was part of the Springbok setup!

His form continued and he was selected to be part of the 1995 RWC winning Springbok squad. That was the last time he was part of the Bok setup and after another two seasons at Transvaal he moved over to the UK to finish his career at Saracens.

He was a late bloomer, but he provided some great rugby moments.
