The accordion forward is a method for deploying hose from rig to door with either 1 ¾” or 2 ½” when you have plenty of room in front of you to flake the hose out. Similar to the V-split, start first by pulling the bottom loop out of the quick attack bed, not the section that's connected to the 2 ½” discharge.
Pull until the stack comes out approximately down to waist level and you can control the nozzle.
Once they can control the nozzle, they squeeze the stack on top of their shoulder, then step away from the rig. Once they have the whole stack on their shoulder, they turn back towards the rig to make sure they've cleared the hose bed. Once the stack is on your shoulder and you're moving away from the rig, you can begin to let the top loops come off the stack.
When you realize you have enough room in front of you to flake out the hose, divide the stack in half. If the hose is on the right shoulder, grab the nozzle with the right hand. Take the left hand and grab the middle bite of the stack. Hold the nozzle and middle bite as you shrug the rest of the hose off your shoulder.
Take the nozzle and middle bite (which should have the 50’ coupling in it or very close) and advance towards your point of entry. Shake the hose out as you advance.
When you get to the point of entry, open up the bite in your left hand to prevent kinking the line when it charges, do your nozzle checks and call for water.
If you have a kink in your line, cycle the nozzle by opening and closing the bale rapidly. The back pressure in the line will help remove the kinks. If cycling the line doesn’t work, physically fix the kinks before making entry.
If you're using the 1 ¾” cross lay, the finish is similar. Take the nozzle in the right hand and grab the big loop that we fold into our cross lays in your left hand. Hold the nozzle in the right hand and the loop in the left as you continue forward towards your target. Flake out the hose, do your nozzle checks, and call for water.
Here is the view from behind. The Firefighter recognizes that they have room in front of them to flake out their hose. So, they grab the nozzle with the right hand the loop with the left, shrug the stack off their shoulder and advance.
They get to the point of entry, flake out their hose, check their nozzle, and call for water.
