Spying on John Gotti, New York Mafia boss

New York Mafia boss John Gotti was a top target of the FBI for more than a decade. He snatched control of the Gambino crime family in 1985 by orchestrating the curbside murder of Paul "Big Paulie" Castellano, the family boss who had succeeded Carlo Gambino. Here is surveillance footage of John Gotti taken by the FBI between 1988 and 1990.
As leader of the New York City-based Gambino crime family, Gotti modernized the image of a Mafia leader from that of a shadowy figure living quietly and humbly to an ostentatious boss embracing consumer culture and celebrity status. Seeming to measure his success by the U.S. standard of fame over power, Gotti became the first Mafia boss to appear as often in the entertainment pages of newspapers as in news sections. He became known as the “Dapper Don” because of his expensive suits and clothing, then the “Teflon Don” because charges against didn’t stick.
That ended on April 2, 1992, when Gotti was convicted of racketeering and murder and sent to prison. In September, 1998, Gotti was diagnosed with throat cancer and had a malignant tumour removed. The cancer re-emerged two years later and as his cancer spread, he was transferred to the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Mo., U.S. prison authorities said.
Gotti was pronounced dead at 11:45 a.m. Jun 10, 2002.
